Finally!

So I finally decided to take the time to start this blog. This has been something I have been thinking about for a long time, and through the inspiration of some very close friends and a research class I took last semester "The Sisterhood" is born. This is intended to be a guide and forum for returned sister missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As an RM and particularly a returned sister we face some interested challenges and go through a wide range of emotions as we come home...hopefully this will help.

Last semester (I am a student at BYU, surprise surprise) I took a research methods class where we had to choose a research topic "that would really serve a purpose." We were encouraged to use our graduate project topics, but that wasn't plausible for me so I went searching. At this same time I had many friends and companions struggling as they came home (or as they had been home for a while) from their missions and it struck me that I should research the transition and helpful coping and social support tools for returned sisters.

The result of this research, which included a literature review; survey development, distribution and analysis; and a focus group and analysis, is a research report which I will post if I can figure out how to do it. It will appear really long because I have included the transcript of the focus group, but the actual report is only about 15 pages. The report is kind of technical in nature and can be a bit overwhelming, but from this report I hope to create the foundations of a survival guide for returned sisters.

If you have any ideas please share them! All sisters are definitely different and we all cope in different ways. But overwhelmingly I found that most RMs are just looking for a little help and some way to have their feeling validated and vented. Hopefully we can all help each other.

Useful Tips for Returned Sisters

* Contribute to "The Sisterhood" blog!
* Do what feels good (even if it's reading your scriptures for 5 hours a day or playing with boys and listening to loud music)
* Say your prayers and read your scriptures!
* Find other returned sisters you can talk to
* Suggest forming an RM Enrichment Group (you can have study sessions, share pictures, go do something crazy together)
* Stay in contact from people with the mission
* Realize other returned sisters are freaking out too
* Get a boyfriend (remember the "do what feels good" tip; if you're not ready to date yet don't force yourself to)
* Don't keep your feelings in; find someone you can really talk to
